Storage facility permit application submitted for carbon dioxide sequestration project

On March 8, Basin Electric submitted the storage facility permit application for the Great Plains CO2 Sequestration Project to the North Dakota Industrial Commission’s Oil and Gas Division.

The application describes the project and demonstrates compliance with applicable rules and regulations for geologic storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in North Dakota. It also includes a site map, details of the technical evaluation of the proposed storage facility, expected operations, testing and monitoring plans, and post-injection site care and closure plans.

According to Tyler Schilke, Basin Electric mechanical engineering supervisor and project coordinator for the Great Plains CO2 Sequestration Project, it took approximately three months to draft the permit application, but he and his team have been gathering and developing data for it since last spring when the test well was drilled.

“We anticipate the permitting process to be complete in late summer or early fall of this year, and then we will be able to begin sequestering CO2 in accordance with the permit requirements,” Schilke said.

The Great Plains CO2 Sequestration Project is a project that would capture carbon dioxide from Dakota Gasification Company's Great Plains Synfuels Plant and transport it to nearby injection wells for permanent storage. The project is located near Beulah, North Dakota. Dakota Gas is a subsidiary of Basin Electric.
