Basin Electric prides itself on its culture and commitment to its employees, offering an impressive benefits package, professional development opportunities, and a supportive work environment to attract the best in the business.

Jonathan Boateng, Basin Electric energy market analyst I, has only been with the cooperative for six months, yet he already feels at home on the trading floor. With a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, and a master of science degree in mathematics from the University of North Dakota (UND) in Grand Forks, Boateng knew he wanted to work at Basin Electric after an internship with the Energy and Environmental Research Center brought him to Headquarters for a tour. “The trading floor caught my eye, and I dreamt about working there,” he says. “Honestly, that’s why I applied for my position, although the salary and benefits are very generous too.”

Boateng is part of the analytics team within Energy Markets. He spends his days building statistical, predictive, and machine learning models to help with load and generation forecasts. “My work includes data science and data analytics,” Boateng says. “It is mostly project based so depending on the project, I usually have to analyze some sort of data to draw patterns and meaning out of it.”

So far, things are going well. “I love working on new projects and I welcome the challenges they bring,” Boateng says. “I thrive on utilizing data from the energy market to build machine learning models that drive decision making and problem solving.”

Boateng is settling in nicely and plans to stay at Basin Electric for the foreseeable future. “I love working at Basin Electric. The people are really friendly, and it gives me a sense of belonging,” he says. “There is a very good supportive work environment here, and a lot of opportunity for professional growth.”

Boateng is a professional piano and keyboard player and has played with various bands and artists in Ghana. In Grand Forks, he played the piano for the UND jazz band and was a sub for the Downtown Horns Band. He has played at bars, parties, and at church. When he’s not playing the piano, he’s challenging himself to a game of FIFA on his PlayStation.

“In my experience working with the Basin Electric, I have found a supportive work environment, opportunities for professional growth, and a commitment to excellence in the energy sector,” Boateng says. “The company’s values align with fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture, making it an ideal workplace for those seeking a rewarding and fulfilling career in the industry.”
