Basin Electric finalizes DOE agreement for Antelope Valley Station Funding

Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Basin Electric) has finalized its agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy. It will receive up to $27.4 million, on a 50/50 cost-share reimbursement basis, to improve critical equipment and infrastructure at Antelope Valley Station. The project was one of a limited number selected through the Department of Energy initiative to support the coal industry, funded under the Defense Production Act, highlighting Antelope Valley Station’s role in supporting a resilient electric grid.

Located in Mercer County, North Dakota, Antelope Valley Station plays an important role in the local economy and regional energy system. It is a lignite coal-fueled power plant with two generating units, each rated at 450 megawatts, designed to deliver consistent, dispatchable electricity.

“Recent regional analyses have identified growing reliability challenges and rising electricity demand, and costs for new generation have increased significantly,” Matt Ehrman, Basin Electric’s vice president of engineering and construction, said. “This underscores the importance of maintaining and strengthening existing generation resources.”

To support continued long-term operation, Basin Electric is considering several key improvements to the turbine and balance-of-plant electrical components. These improvements are expected to enhance performance, reduce unplanned outages, and strengthen overall efficiency, supporting reliable power generation for years to come.
