Winter weather brought new all-time member billing peak

This January, Basin Electric experienced a new all-time high member billing peak. Skye Freeman, member revenue specialist I, said the January 2025 peak demand of 5,150 megawatts (MW) surpassed the previous winter season peak of 5,134 MW which occurred in January 2024.

According to Freeman, Basin Electric typically peaks during the winter months because of winter storms and extreme cold temperatures. This winter, Freeman says new loads throughout the service territory had an impact.

“We have seen continued member load growth over the past few years, and this year was no exception. For instance, it’s anticipated that one of Basin Electric’s members will see a nearly 600 MW load growth increase from 2022 to 2025,” Freeman said. “We also saw a shift in the percentage of power supply being provided by Basin Electric to some of its members, so that made an impact as well.”
