Employees in Military Service

Dakota Gas and its parent company Basin Electric support our employees who are on active duty and also employees who may have an immediate family member on active duty who has sustained an injury while on duty or is recovering from a serious illness.

In 2017, Basin Electric received the distinguished Extraordinary Employer Support Award, presented by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The award was created in 2012 to recognize sustained employer support of National Guard and Reserve service. Fewer than 75 organizations across the country have been presented this award by the Department of Defense, and the award is the U.S. Government's highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve.

Only prior recipients of the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award or the Pro Patria Award, who have demonstrated sustained support for three years after receiving one of those awards, are eligible for consideration at the committee level. Subsequent awards may be given in three-year increments from the initial award.

In 2012 Basin Electric was honored with the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. Fifteen employers nationwide are honored each year. Basin Electric was also a finalist for the Freedom Award in 2010 and 2011. Basin Electric was selected from more than 2,500 nominations submitted for the award.

Thousands of U.S. employers were nominated for outstanding support of Guard and Reserve employees, which included providing full salary, continuation of benefits, care packages and even family support to employees fulfilling their military obligation.

Basin Electric prominently displays its support with a banner at the building entrance, a constant reminder of appreciation for our military employees and their service. The support continues when employees leave for deployment, with Basin Electric providing regular pay raises and offering an "open door" for family members to raise any concerns that develop while their loved one is deployed.

Our support for employees on active duty is part of our commitment to America.

Employee perspective

"Basin Electric has been beyond supportive from every level. I am astonished at how well the organization takes care of its military employees, from allowing additional days off to train for the deployment, to preparing for the transition of duties while I am away, to the continuation of benefit and reassurance of seamless re-employment upon my return." - Kimberly Miller, Basin Electric senior business analyst
